How to Make Your Own Solar Powered Winter Garage Heater

Whilst a lot of people do have electricity in their own garages and sheds, heat can be an issue throughout winter.
However you can take advantage of the sunny days of winter and use solar power from the sun to produce heat in your garage. Particularly if you live in hilly or mountainous areas, where the sun can reflect the suns rays as you could build a solar furnace to collect some of that sunshine that bounces off the snow or that just beams down. Solar powered furnaces have in the past recorded to reach temperatures of up to 110 degrees. So if you have a lot of scrap laying around in your basement, then put it to good use.
You can start with some 2×4’s and plywood to make a simple box. It helps if you build your box to the dimensions of the material that you are going to be fitting in there, in this case you should use aluminum cans because they’re easy to get hold of and to fit into your home made box. 50 cans in 5 columns of 10 will funnel air upwards.
Before putting your cans in the box, be sure to seal the edges with wood glue to ensure that any of the heat that the box produces does not escape.
So you may have already thought, “How can air climb the columns of cans when there’s no hole at the bottom of the can?” Answer: drill press and 3/4-inch bit. Times 45.
The last five cans, the bases of each column, will sit on the bottom of the box and thus will be unable to draw air from underneath, so I poked holes in the sides of each of the five. Stack the cans with liberal doses of adhesive caulk. Give them enough time to dry. Once they have dried paint each column with black BBQ paint to absorb the suns heat, make sure that the paint is matt, as it absorbs more heat like this, BBQ paint is also very good because it keeps from flaking off the cans.
At the top, you can then drill an outlet hole. Leave an inch or two of space between the tops of the columns and the top of the box to permit air to flow out of the columns. Drill out the outlet hole based on the diameter of a wet-dry vacuum hose that you could find laying in your basement, about 1-1/2 inches in diameter.
At the bottom you can use another wet-dry vacuum attachment; the rectangle shaped end that you use on the carpet, this will disperse the incoming air more evenly. Screw it in at each ends, then glue the seal. Then you can start to glue the columns in place. Remember to have drilled your inlet hole in the bottom. You can drill an inlet hole at the base for each column if you have time, this way the air can simply pass over the cans (there’s about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch between the cans and the upper edge of the 2×4 frame) and all the air would be forced to pass though them picking up all of the absorbed heat.
You can then make a frame for your solar powered furnace using anything strong enough to hold it up towards the sun, you may wish to attach a thermometer to it to see how quickly it heats up and to what temperatures it can reach. Once it has been out side all day you can then bring it inside your garage and the heat that has been preserved by the solar heater shall radiate through your chosen space to heat up.

www.shcri.com – On April 20th, 2009, Gold Wind won the bid of wind power concession projects of Inner Mongolia and Hebei, totaling 775,500 KW. The 517 bid machines are all GW77-1500 and the total value reaches RMB 4.187 billion (611 million USD). The delivery period spans from 2009 to 2012. XEMC won the bid of wind power concession projects of Fengning Wansheng wind power plant on Hebei Chengde wind power base, altogether 150,000 KW totaling RMB 797 million (116.3 million USD). In addition, XEMC also won the bid of wind power projects of Weichang Yudaokou wind power plant on Hebei Chengde wind power base, altogether 200,000 KW totaling RMB 796 million (116.2 million USD).

 

This wind power project of 5.25 million KW involves 25 wind power plants. Over 20 wind power entire-machine enterprises participate in bidding. Compared with the 3.8 million KW project bid of Gansu Jiuquan, the number of enterprises which have won the bids shows a slight increase. In the project of Gansu Jiuquan, besides Gold Wind, Sinovel and DEC, CSIC (Chongqing) Haizhuang also won a small bid. It is estimated that about 5 enterprises will win the bids this time and the share made up by the additional enterprises except the three tycoons will see an apparent increment. At present, after developing technologies and establishing productivity at early stage, altogether 70 plus wind power entire-machine enterprises have owned capability of bulk supply. Therefore, they all make great efforts to win the huge bid this time. In this way, the combination of wind power operator and wind power supplier might be a trend of China’s domestic wind power market in future.

 

In this bidding, the price of wind power machines witnesses an apparent drop. The price of GW77-1500 bid won by Gold Wind in June 2008 stood at RMB 6398/KW that time and slipped to RMB 5399/KW this time. Although the prices of raw materials and spare parts affect the prices of bid machines, another factor of fierce competition within China’s wind power equipment industry can not be ignored as well. It is predicted that the total output of Gold Wind, Sinovel and DEC in 2009 will reach 7 million KW. Even if the demand will perhaps jump to 120 million KW in 2020, China’s wind power industry will represent an inevitable trend of surplus. In general, wind power entire-machine industry will see an increasingly apparent decline in gross profits in future. Certainly, there are differences between enterprises. Some will be kicked out and some excellent ones will create more profits than the average amount of the whole industry.

 

The increased installed capacity of China’s wind power machines rose by 89 percent to 6.25 million KW in 2008 and the amount of this bid reached 5.25 million KW. The wind energy resources are greatly affected by the terrain. In the world, the wind energy resources mainly center on the coastal areas and the contraction zones of the broad continents, such as the coastal areas in California of America; some European countries; the southeastern coastal areas, and Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Gansu areas in China.

 

In the southeastern coastal areas and nearby islands in China, the wind energy density reaches 300 W/m2 and the annual accumulative wind at speed of 3 to 20 m/s exceeds 6 thousand hours. Compared with the installed capacity of 5.906 million in the end of 2007, the accumulative growth rate of the installed capacity was 106% in 2008. The electricity volumes of the grids will be 12 billion KW in 2009 in China, accounting for 0.04% of the total electric power production.

 

The wind power farms in China mainly concentrate in the north and southeastern coastal areas and few in the west regions, where are abundant in the wind power resources. And these areas are in remote mountainous areas, away from the power plants, power transmission is more inconvenient, where have large development perspectives for the wind power market.

 

At present, three local large electricity generating manufacturers have entered the wind power equipment industry and major foreign wind power unit manufacturers have also set up their factories in China. Due to the fast development of Chinese wind power industry and the rapid growth in the wind power set manufacture, many other enterprises are willing to enter the wind power manufacture on basis of its promising perspectives. However, there are high technical and policy barriers in Chinese wind power set manufacture

 

At present, the investment subjects in Chinese wind power farms major in the state owned large electricity groups and in diversity, many investors of which are low in the ability of sustainable development. Owning to the wind power sets accounting for 70% of the total investments, the investors are very sensitive to the prices of the wind power sets.

 

In China, there are more than 70 complete wind power set manufacturers, more than 50 blade manufacturers and near 100 tower tube manufacturers. The yield capacity has been far beyond the market capacity if calculating by the yield capacity of the companies. In China, the wind power equipment manufacture is just raised, the development of the industrial chains is not very perfect and the complete wind power set manufacture is serious retrained from the bottleneck in the crucial accessories. The localization of the major accessories of the wind power generating sets below MW-class has been a reality, which can be supplied in bulk. However, there are still large gaps in the corn accessories of the wind power generating sets above MW-class; the quality of the accessories produced in the local enterprises is not very reliable.
